The Project
Our brief from the Captain was to prolong the life of the paint job for another year before the scheduled re-spray. This would have significant cost savings.
Our first goal was to ensure that our service significantly extended the paint life well beyond the expectations of the Captain. Phryne, due to the initial build quality and the care of the crew had never had a re-spray in its 9 years of service. However the Captain decided to order the renovation of the hull, superstructure (including both booms but not the transom. So the First Mate contacted SeaSkin for a demonstration.
Our Solution
To prove to the Captain the effectiveness of our treatments we asked for a demonstration to be set up. This involved treating a small area of the hull so that a comparison could be made between that and the untreated area.
To begin with we took gloss readings of the untreated area. These initial readings were 25 -30 Gloss Units (GU) which are considered to be a low value. After our treatment this same area now returned a significant visual improvement and a gloss reading of over 90GU. This represented a substantial increase and clearly demonstrated that the Awlgrip painted surfaces could be restored to their former glory.
The SeaSkin team carried out the hull treatment in the MB92 Boatyard and then treated the superstructure after she had returned to the water.
Results
All the treated areas have retained their finish. So much so that the Captain ordered the previously untreated Transom to undergo the SeaSkin application 8 months later.
Captains's Comments
Here's what Captain Stuart Bird of Phryne had to say about our services:
Phryne is a 50mt Perini Navi sailing yacht with a blue hull and white superstructure. After completing a two year circumnavigation, Phryne was almost ready for a complete paint job.
I had met David Benson from Seaskin International on previous occasions and was impressed by the results he had achieved on other vessels in the marina. I then decided to go ahead with the treatment of Phryne starting with the blue hull during our yard period.
We could see immediately how well the system was giving depth and returning the original gloss to our Perini blue hull. The white superstructure was then treated with similar results.
The work was carried out to a very high standard as David's team are a dedicated and professional outfit.
I would highly recommend this treatment to other captains as this has certainly extended the life of the paint work on Phryne.
